Improv Class Wed., July 6, 2020
Tue Jul 07, 2020 9:24 pm
Improv is “flowing.”
One begins to improvise on arrival on the set. It’s unlikely we know the people, there. The room may be unfamiliar. The director only gives the marks.
The three essential elements in all improv—everything we do
1. Environment What do I sense is the temp, humidity, light or dark, noisy or quiet, odorous, Experience quickly. Don’t show it—Don’t indicate.
2. Objects
3. Who I am
These are impulsive but grounded in something--something we’ve experienced before and can resurrect the sense of.
Zone of concentration
If this is interrupted by something negative that one needs to dismiss quickly:
i.e. If imagery turns negative, Gwen shared the following with us
See 5 things, Hear 4 things, Touch 3 things, Smell 2 things and Taste 1 thing
My method is: If a negative thought enters my mind (usually a painful memory, or feeling of guilt) I replace that thought immediately with three positive affirmations.
And I return my entire focus to the present moment and stay there.
We should have a sense of letting go of ourselves and allow things to happen as if we are there.
Lying is not comfortable or even needed I create what is actual.
The most important thing they (directors) want to see is you in the moment of discovery.

Thank you for the great suggestions Jeanne! So much of the creative battle is a mental exercise isn't it?
